Are You Losing Your Ortho Patients?

You will agree that these days’ patients have gone impatient. Consider a situation where patient is looking for orthodontic treatment but you don’t have an orthodontist available at that point of time then there is bright chance that patient will visit next door dentist to get his treatment started. In India especially in rural areas, general dental practitioners lose several patients every year because of unavailability of Orthodontists. Are you losing your Ortho patients to such problem? If yes, then you can go with any of three options below.

Option 1: Hire a full time orthodontist (which is not feasible for every practitioner) or look for an orthodontic consultant who can be available immediately. (which is rarely possible)

Option 2: Close down your successfully running practice or hand it over to someone (which is not a good idea) and invest your precious time and hard earned money to join 3 year MDS Orthodontics and then start over your practice after 3 years from zero.

Option 3: Join a Good Fixed Orthodontic workshop that you can attend parallel to your practice and start treating simple orthodontic cases immediately if not complex which can be handed over to respective consultant orthodontist. (at least you won’t lose your patients)

It’s fine if you go with first two options but what if you decide to go with last option?

Can General Dentists Practice Fixed Ortho?

1. A dentist with valid degree from Dental Council of India having mandatory license can practice Fixed orthodontics. It’s not DCI that stops general dentists from practicing fixed orthodontics but the respective branch society. (Will make the supporting document available soon)

2. There are many orthodontists who are experts in branches like Endo, Aesthetic dentistry, Implants and many other branches of dentistry and I consider this as their achievement. If these orthodontists can practice other branches then why general dental practitioners or dentists from other branches can’t practice Ortho?

3. If every society decides to have such attitude then general dental practitioners will be good for nothing. They will have to call endodontist for RCT, Oral surgeon for extractions, Prosthodontist for Dentures, Periodontist for scaling and even for diagnosis you will have to call someone from ODMR.

4. But of course, there is something that one should always keep in mind that, if you fail to treat your patient in most appropriate way or if he has to suffer due to your poor clinical skills or negligence then the patient has right to sue you no matter if you have Diploma or MDS in Orthodontics or any other branch of dentistry for that matter.
